Russian airlines sell e-tickets

Next-Stop.ru | 2 June 2008
On June 1 Russian airlines (members of International Air Transport Association (IATA)) must have begun to sell e-tickets instead of paper ones.

The IATA demands weren’t completely fulfilled: Russian airlines didn’t fully rejected paper tickets, because the majority of the Russian airports are not ready for the innovation.

E-tickets can be bought via the Internet or at the ticket offices.

The development of E-ticketing is prevented by the badly organized e-commerce, lack of Internet development and unwillingness of Russians.

E-tickets first appeared in USA with the development of information technology in 1996. They quickly replaced usual paper tickets by 2000.

90 % of the world transportation is supplied by e-tickets today.

The e-tickets are cheaper than paper ones, because there are no any expenses for paper and other materials.
E-tickets began to be used in Russia last year. “Aeroflot” sold 100 thousand e-tickets in 2007. “Transaero” and “Ural Airlines” then also introduced new system into practice. E-tickets are now used in hundreds of routes.
